The Smalls is a curator of independent short film, committed to the discovery and promotion of new film talent through their community website, events and competitions.
When first set up in 2006, the enthusiastic team behind The Smalls had a vision of pairing raw talent with important broadcasters and were in real need of attracting talent to their first award & showcase.
Building on the witty word play “The Smalls” (also meaning the small clothing – the underwear) used to describe short films, our design inspires playfulness with language and ideas. Using a colourful approach and applying illustration on the visual identity was a clear move away from a corporate look that enabled us to catch the attention of the truly independent minds of filmmakers and still work across different media such as digital, print and animation.
Ever since, we have continued to collaborate with The Smalls team as their vision takes new forms, such as developing their online community platform and producing designs for such offshoots as The Comedy Smalls, where they’ve partnered up with giant Paramount Comedy for an exclusive annual competition.
The Smalls is now a leading online social network for people in filmmaking and broadcasting and collaborates with among others Apple, Virgin, Nokia and Creative Review.
